He is the most widely translated and widely read French writer of the 20th century. To mark the centenary of his birth on November 7, 1913, Joël Calmettes, who had already directed two films about the Nobel Prize-winning author — La tragédie du bonheur (with Jean Daniel) and Le journalisme engagé — travels around the world to meet readers of all ages and backgrounds whose lives have been profoundly influenced by his work.
